Summer's end is around the bend, and it's time to make some seasonal home changes. But don't worry, these changes won't have you breaking the bank, as there are simple ways to stick to your existing design with timeless staples while making small detail updates to infuse seasonal charm.
Learn how you can switch out the bright colors and light linens of endless summer days for cozy layers and warm palettes that reflect the fall fashion, in this guide to blending summer decor into fall trends.
While summer might be the season for fresh flowers, autumn brings forth a whole new color palette to play with. Add fall floral arrangements to your vases through dried flower arrangements, faux tree branches, or even autumnal flowers like the sunflower. Infuse the natural world wherever you can indoors through fall wreaths, pressed leaves for artwork, and raw wood accents.
The quickest way to transition from summer decor to fall is by switching out fabrics, like light linen and cotton fabrics, for thicker materials like velvet and sherpa. Take inspiration from sweater weather by incorporating cozy textiles, like swapping out your light silk bedsheets for flannel covers and cable-knit blankets. Use fabrics in jewel tones like golden brown, emerald green, and deep blue to lend a fall vibe. Work with plaid and gingham patterns to give your space an autumnal charm.
Start with a cozy autumnal base, featuring warm-toned throws and rustic accents. Fall is all about layering, so throw cozy blankets over chairs to warm up your rooms in the cold months. Enhance the autumnal feel with decorative gourds, dried foliage arrangements, and scented candles, adding depth and texture to your space. To complete the fall transformation, consider layering in a few elegant, deep-hued curtains that not only keep the chill out but also add a touch of sophistication. By skillfully layering these elements, you'll infuse your home with a cozy, hygge vibe.
Cozy lighting is a must when the days are shorter and the nights drag on. Layer your lighting as you would layer materials throughout your home. Start by swapping out bright, cool-toned bulbs for warmer, amber ones to instantly create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Scatter a few strategically placed candles or lanterns throughout your space to cast soft, flickering light that mimics the gentle glow of autumnal evenings.
Consider adding string lights or fairy lights to your indoor and outdoor areas for a touch of enchantment. For a rustic touch, opt for fixtures with copper or bronze accents that evoke the hues of autumn leaves.
Chances are, you have a few forgotten spaces in your house —like that window corner in the bedroom where all your old books sit or the bench beneath the stairs with discarded shoes. Use this time to make these spaces intentional nooks to cozy up in this fall. Maybe this means transitioning your summer grill space into an outdoor firepit or turning that storage closet into an art space. Regardless of how much space you have, find a way to infuse your personality and hobbies into your home this fall. By making these simple adjustments, you'll effortlessly transform your forgotten spaces into a haven of comfort and warmth, perfect for enjoying the crisp, autumn days ahead.
While summer activities are fun, from beach days to mountain biking, the season can wear on your floors. Foot traffic from the kids on summer break, combined with your home workouts, not to mention the high temperatures and humidity, isn't the easiest on your floors, so back-to-school is the perfect time to give your floors a refresh.
Start by sweeping and vacuuming to get rid of dust and debris before moving on to mopping. Consider hiring a carpet cleaner for your carpeted spaces, like the family room and bedrooms, to save time and ensure a thorough cleaning. Of course, always consult your flooring product's warranty for instructions on how to best clean and care for your specific floors.
Last, but certainly not least, add area rugs to your space! Layering rugs is an easy way to warm up rooms and change the overall color scheme or vibe with a small budget. Whether you opt for a bold oriental rug in rich hues as a focal point for your living room or a muted, neutral-toned rug to slip under your bed, area rugs infuse warmth —not to mention, they're delightfully soft on your feet during the cold winter months.
